Design Museum Holon
24th April 2018
I guess if anyone was going to be the first man to open a Design Museum in Israel, it would be Ron Arad. Born in Tel Aviv in 1951, educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art, relocating to London, he spent time at the Architectural Association. He worked closely with Caroline Thorman at the One Off Studio and from 1994 to 1999 he created the Ron Arad Studio and production unit in Como, Italy. Ultimately he established Ron Arad Architects with Ron Arad Associates in 2008. No slouch, he remained Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London until 2009. In 2011 London Design Week awarded him the Medal for Design Excellence and in 2013 he became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The Design Museum created together with Asa Bruno is a triumph of design, constructed from five bands of steel which are subtly different shades, having the effect of sweeping up the interior space and adding a strong sense of movement. It opened to great acclaim in March 2010. The bright middle-eastern light only serves to emphasise the colour and shape. It is made up of two galleries including a bright upper gallery and an educational space.
