William Pereira and Associates brutalist, otherworldly cantilevered library for the University or California in San Diego. The design is composed of six floors above ground and two below. Completed in 1970, today’s library has benefited from two updates to accommodate its popularity. Some of the details are eye watering: 38,000 square feet of plate glass, according to the library’s dedicated site “the building contains 17000 cubic yards of concrete. To bear the weight and stress ...four massive cast-in-place vents or slope beam columns are anchored in footings containing 1500 cubic yards of concrete on each of the 4 sides of the building. The bent angle upward at 46 degrees to the 6th level and are literally tied to their counterpart across the building at the 5th and 6th levels ’ The library was renamed in honour of Theodor & Audrey Geisel. Theodor wrote the Dr Seuss series of books introducing and nurturing generations of children to love reading.

‘Wisdom and Knowledge shall be the Stability of

‘Wisdom and Knowledge shall be the Stability of Thy Time’ Isaiah 33:6. Created by American architectural sculptor, Lee Lawrie together with Léon-Victor Solon. The son of an employee at the famed Mintons factory in Stoke on Trent, Solon and the factory’s artistic director, Léon Arnoux, he was credited with bringing Art Nouveau design and Viennese Secessionist designs to the Minton collections. In 1909 he emigrated to America. He specialised in polychroming - “the practice of decorating architectural elements, sculpture, etc., in a variety of colours”. His first commission for the Rockefeller project was the Wisdom, Light and Sound sculpture - it was so well received that he was commissioned to oversee the colour aspect of the whole site. Today we still enjoy his wonderful vision.
