The 1937 Savoy Theatre in Newcastle, New South Wales, today its New Lambton’s Community Centre.

According to Cinema Treasures in a 1946 review if you visited you could sample “entertainment by Wilbur Kentwell and his ‘toe tapping’ organ music. Kentwell later became a big name in Sydney radio”.

Music and cinema buffs, any thoughts about what would have been showing or what might have made those toes tip-tap? We’ve spotted Michael Balcon’s 1946 The Overlanders an Australian Western with cinematography by Osmond Borradaile (whose name alone makes him worthy mention), edited by Leslie Norman - Ealing Studios stalwart, who had a hand in just about every 1960s and 70s TV hit now on permanent replay on British TV… The Avengers, Randall and Hopkirk, The Persuaders, The Saint and more.

The historic 1976 museum designed by Powell and Moya has closed. Its collections are in storage ready to move into its new home in 2026 in the heart of Smithfield meat market, in the formerly derelict Victorian General Market.

Its new name, the London Museum.
