Opened in 1954, this former Krupp petrol station i Opened in 1954, this former Krupp petrol station in Bochum, Germany, has a dramatic mushroom canopy and curved glass kiosk. To give context to the date*, in 1954 Krupp was rebuilding its industrial business under Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. A major arms manufacturer for Nazi Germany, the company had exploited forced labour, including concentration camp prisoners. Alfried was convicted of war crimes in 1948 and sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment and confiscation of his property. His sentence was commuted and his property restored in 1951; by 1953, he had returned to lead the company. The station belongs to this period of postwar reconstruction, inseparable from the recent history of the business whose name it carried. Granted heritage protection in 1997, it was later incorporated into a Burger King restaurant. But does protected status offer enough protection in practice? How well is this architectural treasure being cared for amid the demands and daily wear of a busy fast food outlet? Love the way the curves repeat across the façade, with chairs and plants tucked into the deep recesses. The Generali emblem probably owns or historically owned the building. Not too sure - if you know … tell all.
