1957, Chips coffee shop, Hawthorne, Los Angeles. Designed by Taliesen-trainer Harry Harrison in Googie style. LA Conservancy notes, ‘Above all, there is the signage, starting with the five steel mesh drums, each holding a letter to spell out CHIPS for all the north-bound traffic to see’. If we only got the chance to drive by we’d see ‘the letters are angled so they appear to shift and turn toward you as you drive past’. Harrison also worked with Richard Neutra.
