This is the ‘Mushroom building’ part of Harry Seidler’s MLC Centre at 25 Martin Place in Sydney. Today the ‘mushroom’ is home to the Commercial Travellers’ Association Club, said to retain a strong 70s vibe … but maybe not so much after renovations are completed this month. And what of modernist, Seidler’s vision? Did the public like it, his creation which included a plaza and adjoining buildings, his “city within a city”? In reality it got mixed reviews. It received the Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ Sir John Sulman Medal and Civic Design Award however it got a somewhat muted response from the public.
