Public sauna created by the Berlin based group of architectures, Raumlabor in Frihamnen Gothenburg,Sweden. In contrast the interior which looks beautiful, is covered in larch and the shower room is decorated with recycled glass from the bases of wine bottles. Simple idea and very striking. Raumlabor which translates as Space Laboratory is comprised of a group of super imaginative and creative architects who came together in 1999 as they saw their home town change in part beyond recognition. They describe their work as ‘in between the fields of architecture and public art’ and ‘create projects based around events, performance and theatre. Collaboration is a key part of their strategy with specialists including engineers, sociologists, local experts, ethnographers and citizens, being brought together around specific projects’. They are big fans of Yona Friedman, Buckminster Fuller and Haus-Rucker, Paris based Exyzt and Urban Catalyst.

Brasilia! Residência Nivaldo Borges, the ‘mansion of arches’ 1978, showcasing the artistry of João Filgueiras Lima aka Lelé.

The residence built with a 120 seat private cinema today is frequently used as an exhibition space with a particular emphasis on film reflecting its owner, Nivaldo’s fascination with the medium. According to Mansão dos Arcos, Nivaldo enjoyed inviting friends ‘every Saturday, at 21:00 sharp. Lucky viewers could have access to several films…’ today you no longer have to hope you might receive an invitation to visit.

Born in Rio de Janeiro and later a resident of Salvador, the architect Lelé will always be remembered for his contribution to the wellbeing of fellow Brazilians. He made choices early on about how he wanted his knowledge and expertise to be used to the best advantage. He shared centre stage with the icons who built Brasilia, working side by side with a Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. Full post about Lelé on Greyscape.com link in our bio.
