Speculative Suburban Houses 1928-38 is the third in our series of Mini Guides, each exploring the modernist buildings of a particular location or architect. This edition documents the art deco and modernist influenced housing of the interwar housing boom that created the London suburbs that we know today.

Mod in Metro’s guide features ‘work by famous architects of the era such as Berthold Lubetkin, Erno Goldfinger and Wells Coates, as well as a host of lesser known figures who had an equally big influence on the look of the growing city of the 1930s. The book covers the whole of the suburbs of London, from Barnet in the north to Bromley in the south and from the western outskirts of Twickenham right across to the eastern edges of Gidea Park. ‘

The 84-page guide has 65 colour images of a variety of surviving houses, with detailed descriptions and histories. Printed on Silk 150 gsm paper, with a 250 gsm matt laminated cover.

Joshua Abbott, author of this invaluable mini-guide is the founder of Modernism in Metro-Land (MiM) website ‘documenting and celebrating’ Modernist and Art Deco buildings in Greater London.  He’s hugely knowledgable and his books are stuffed with excellent suggestions for a trip into ‘Metro-land’, and even an armchair flick through this book reminds us of how little we know about familiar buildings around us.
