In 1964 two boroughs merged to become The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Historically Kensington Council received its status as ‘Royal Borough’ in 1901 carrying out Queen Victoria’s wish to note where she was born. 63 years later, the newly formed Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea carried forward its Royal status and to this day even its street furniture carries the Coat of Arms of the Kensington and Chelsea Council.
