Brutal London by Simon Phipps

Brutal London: A Photographic Exploration of Post-War London

Celebrating the architecture that was ignored by Londoners for too many years, Simon Phipps takes the reader on a photographic journey arranged by Inner London boroughs and with full information on all buildings featured. And usefully, it fits inside a big coat pocket. Brutal London includes some very well known examples such as Trellick Tower, the Brunswick Centre and the Alexandra Road Estate, but also explores the less familiar too which is what makes it so fascinating.

Simon Phipps is a fine arts photographer and the creator of the New Brutalism collection of photography on Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter. He is a graduate in sculpture from The Royal College of Art. He grew up in Milton Keynes where his parents were architects involved in the design of the city.

‘It serves as an introduction to buildings the reader may see every day, an invitation to look differently, a challenge to look up afresh or to seek our celebrated Brutalism across the capital’.

‘The image provided by Brutalism, an architecture of sensual extremes, is often an extraordinary and unfamiliar experience for the city explorer. There can be something thrilling about the aggressive and brash vocabulary of board-marked concrete, exposed aggregate, hard-edged brick and heavy sectioned timber, the expressed palette which displays the truth of its materials and a disdain for the frivolous.’
