What does a circle symbolise? When the architect P What does a circle symbolise? When the architect Paolo Portoghesi designed the Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia in Salerno he was said to be attempting to create a ‘metaphor of the divine and its centrality’. A former director of the Venice Bienniale, Portoghesi, who recently passed away, he worked on the project together with Vittorio Gigliotti for more than 40 years. Located in the heart of Fratte, an old working class neighbourhood of Salerno, from discussions that began in 1969, building principally took place from 1971-74. He executed his huge vision brilliantly, the church is made up of six ‘centres’ contained in concentric circles all made entirely of reinforced concrete. The team must have had an awful lot of patience as the project ultimately took nearly 40 years, as recently as 2011 work was still ongoing, today the church looks magnificent. Huge thanks to @_karl_moab_ for the photos!
