After the 1947 Partition, Chandigahr was named as After the 1947 Partition, Chandigahr was named as the new capital city in the Indian Punjab. For Prime Minister Nehru, Chandigahr would be, ‘an expression of the nation’s faith in the future.’

Construction began in 1952 with a plan created by American architect and urban planner Albert Mayer who worked together with Polish-American architect Matthew Nowicki. However Nowicki unexpectedly passed away and after a new search Corbusier was chosen to replace him. In the initial stages of this huge project Corbusier worked from France, creating the plan for the Capitol Complex from his Paris studio. Meanwhile the residential district was created by Pierre Jeanneret, Corbu’s cousin who was brought into the project. The team that grew enormously included British modernists Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, and a large Indian team of architects including Urmila Eulie Chowdhury, Aditya Prakash, Vikramaditya Prakash and Jeet Malhotra.
